Winding footpaths span over steep cliffsides and through vineyards. A railway line from the 1800s cut through the mountains in a series of tunnels taking villagers and visitors from town to town.
Cinque Terre first became populated during the Medieval period. Many of the homes and churches in the area date back to that time, as well as the remains of several castles.
