These days, social media is often our go-to for travel inspiration. This year, be your own influencer and take your family on a memorable vacation to one of the world’s trendiest destinations. Take photos that’ll be immortalized online at:
- Legendary landmarks: Snap panoramic photos from the Top of the Rock to the Eiffel Tower
- Awe-inspiring sites: Marvel at the Mayan ruins in Tulum
- Colorful backdrops: Take in the pastel hues of Cinque Terre to the bold pops of color at the Keukenhof’s tulip gardens
Paris
When it comes to trendy cities, Paris tops the list with its iconic landmarks, Gothic architecture and delectable cuisine. Take astounding pictures of the Eiffel Tower from the vantage viewpoint across the river at Trocadero Plaza, or purchase a ticket to the top (elevator passes are available) for panoramic vistas of the city.
From there, be sure to say “oui” to visiting the Arc De Triomphe. Watch out for your kiddos near the end of the Champs-Élysées because there can be heavy traffic here, or you can go inside the arc for a more immersive experience. There are elevator passes available, but some stair climbing is still required to reach the top.
The Louvre Museum holds all sorts of artistic treasures inside, but its glass pyramid exterior is also worth taking in. Visit the courtyard before the museum opens or after it closes for fewer crowds. The museum itself is a fun activity with older kids in the family. Turn it into a game and see who can find the Mona Lisa painting or the Venus de Milo sculpture first.
Hop across the street to the black-and-white striped columns of the Palais Royal to snap a family photo here before exploring the open promenade and its adjacent gardens.
Italy
From the Amalfi Coast’s Mediterranean shores to Rome’s historic ruins, Italy is a dream vacation destination for families. You and your crew can eat your fill of pizza, pasta and gelato, and parents can pair their meals with a glass wine made from local Sangiovese grapes.
Vacation in Venice and explore the seemingly endless maze of cobblestone walkways with surprises at every corner. The city’s walkways aren’t very stroller friendly, so you might want to pack your baby carrier if you’re traveling with little ones. Don’t miss out on the signature Venetian experience of cruising the canals with an operatic gondolier. This activity is for all ages, but be sure to hold on tight to little ones.
Venture to Rome to conquer the Colosseum. Older kids will love all the detail and context of a guided tour but opt for self-guided exploration instead if you’re traveling with little kids, as they might lose interest. There are a lot of stairs to climb here but luckily there are elevators available for anyone in the family that may need them. For a truly special experience, take a tour at night. Groups are limited after dark, so you’ll feel like you have the entire Colosseum to yourself. After you’ve channeled your inner gladiator, enjoy a cone of gelato at the legendary Trevi Fountain – don’t forget to toss a coin into it!
The colorful region of Cinque Terre is also a delightful destination for families. Made up of five quaint villages, this charming area has beautiful scenery you won’t find elsewhere. If your family is up for the challenge, you can hike from village to village on the connection of trails there. Make it an all-day excursion and head out from Monterosso, the largest of the five towns and also the only town with a sandy beach. From there you’ll hike to Vernazza, where you can see the medieval castle, before continuing on to Corniglia for basil-flavored gelato. Next up is Manarola, which is where the famous Via dell’Amore trail will take you on to Riomaggiore, the last of the five towns. Reward yourselves after a long hike by jumping into the harbor for a refreshing swim.
The rocky landscape and steep stairs may be difficult for families with young kids and grandparents so, if needed, opt for a comfortable train ride instead (the ride takes only a few minutes between villages).
Netherlands
Filled with serene canals and impressive architecture, the Netherlands is a beautiful destination for family vacations, from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, the country’s capital.
Amsterdam might be known for a certain district but is actually a popular hub for families, too. Rent a bike and spend the day navigating the city on wheels, just like the locals. View the city from a different angle by chartering a boat and cruising the calm canals with your family. Take a day trip to Keukenhof to view more than 7 million vibrant tulips that are signature to the area (open mid-March to mid-May). There’s also a windmill, playground and even a scavenger hunt that your kids can enjoy.
Rotterdam also has impressive scenery and delightful family activities. You’ll love exploring the enchanting windmills in Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn how the windmills help keep the land above water, peek inside them and walk the paths that wind between the 19 windmills. Explore the city on a bike or on a boat tour and see architectural wonders like the Cube Houses, or see the city from above at the Euromast Tower.
Tulum, Mexico
Tulum’s beaches, historic ruins and native wildlife can feel like a complete escape from the normal hustle and bustle of your everyday life. The town fully embraces its chill beach vibes and offers up expeditions that are sure to have you feeling relaxed and reconnected.
Kick off your family vacation in Tulum with some fun in the sun at one of the stunning white sand beaches like Playa Pariso Beach. The strong undercurrents of the water may be a bit much for those who aren’t avid swimmers so bring life jackets or play on the shore. Strong swimmers can also enjoy the dazzling cenotes, or water filled sinkholes, that are unique to the area, like Cenote Suytun. Life jackets are usually provided at the cenotes, but it is still only recommended for older kids and adults.
All ages can enjoy touring the historic Mayan ruins throughout the area. Learn about how the Mayans used to live, search for sunbathing iguanas, see the mural in the Temple of the Frescoes or simply enjoy the adjacent beach.
New York City
Inhabit a New York state of mind by scouting Manhattan’s most notable attractions. Ascending to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center for panoramic views of the city is an activity the entire family will love. From there, pop over to Radio City Music Hall to catch a show before venturing over to Times Square to visit the M&M Store with your youngest family members, or grab lunch near Bryant Park. It’s always time for a bagel in NYC, and we recommend walking over to 3rd Avenue to Ess-a-Bagel (831 3rd Ave.). If you’re in the mood for pizza, look no further than Joe’s Pizza (1435 Broadway).
Central Park is a short jaunt away and has tons of things to do with the family. Spend some time exploring all its nooks and crannies to find treasures like the Gapstow Bridge, the Belvedere Castle, the zoo and the Carousel. There is a lot of ground to cover here, but it is stroller friendly and has plenty of benches for when your feet may need a rest.
If you haven’t been before, make time to visit the Statue of Liberty. Touring the towering statue can be a feat with family, so our tip is to take the free Staten Island Ferry for perfect views (and pictures) of this iconic monument.
