Holland America Line makes special effort to highlight Alaska culture

2022-03-15

In recognition of its 75th anniversary of sailing in Alaska, Holland America Line is introducing a new line of programming to deepen guests’ understanding of cultural, culinary and shoreside experiences.

The “Alaska Up Close” program will feature local experts leading workshops and lectures, multimedia talks revealing the stories of real Alaskans, tours highlighting the importance of each destination, and culinary immersion in local cuisine.

“Alaska is so abundant that it needs to be explored and presented differently, and with ‘Alaska Up Close’ our guests will have access to activities and experiences that they won’t find anywhere else,” said Beth Bodensteiner, senior vice president and chief commercial officer, Holland America Line. “We want our guests to be immersed in Alaska from the moment they step onboard, and as we celebrate 75 years of exploring Alaska in 2022, we tapped into our unparalleled expertise to craft memorable and exclusive programming.”

Talks will offer insight into local culture through conversations about Alaskan women working in fields dominated by men, how Alaskans keep their culture and language alive, and descriptions of what it’s like to race in a sled.

Other events will focus on the science and history of Alaska’s natural areas.

The program will also include a screening of BBC Earth’s “Alaska in Concert,” a multimedia performance featuring a live orchestra performing a soundtrack to the footage of BBC Earth television series “Wild Alaska.”

Holland American Line will also introduce guests to culinary traditions in Alaska, like local seafood and Anchorage’s craft beer. Guests on fishing excursions can have Holland America Line chefs prepare their big catch.

Holland America Line will have six ships sailing Alaska in 2022. Ships will sail roundtrip from Seattle and Vancouver or sail between Vancouver and Whittier, Alaska.
